Nashville, NC has failed me again. All I wanted was to make hummus last night. All I needed was tahini. After two stops and the feeling of absolute defeat (not to mention I was tired of walking in heels), I went home. I was mad and I was sad. Tahini was nowhere to be found. (But don’t you worry, I could find 10 pound buckets of lard. Sick. This town needs help.) All I wanted to do was make hummus. I had been dreaming of cilantro-jalapeno hummus alllllll day.
Thankfully, Tina had posted a recipe for hummus that didn’t require tahini, so I improvised. I was determined to have hummus. Homemade-hummus at that.
Into the blender (because I don’t have a fabulous food processor…one day my friends, one day): 2 cans chickpeas (one drained, one not), 1 tablespoon EVOO, 1 teaspoon cumin, bunch of cilantro, one jalapeno, 3 tablespoons minced garlic (as you know, I lurrrrve gaaahhhh-lic).
Next time, I’ll remember to add the lemon juice, I had already washed the blender and I wasn’t about to dirty it up again. Lazy? Maybe. But the hummus was still tasty without it. Also – I’ll add one more jalapeno. One just wasn’t enough for my taste buds. I like a little heat.
The final verdict? For my first time making hummus (and without tahini), it was good!!! But this is not the end of the hummus diaries… Big Guy, be afraid, be very afraid. I’m about to fill the fridge with hummmmus.
I think scallion hummus is next….
P.S. Can anyone tell me what these are?:
All I know is they’re fresh and they’re NOT good raw. I love almost all veggies in their natural state, but this is an exception. I hate to waste them – so what do I do with them?!?!?!

Yum! they look like snap peas? http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/eating-well/snap-pea-salad-with-radish-lime-recipe/index.html
You already have some of the ingredients!
Thanks, Laura!!! I’m not sure if they’re snap peas or not – but I’m sure I could substitute them in. I like sugar snap peas raw – that’s why I don’t think that’s what they are….I’ll have to get Chris to investigate…..
Maybe fava beans? I honestly don’t know what a fava bean is, but it’s the first word that jumped into my head.
I wonder if they’d be good cooked up in a stirfry of some sort.
The hummus looks amazing! I’ve yet to buy tahini for those times when I make hummus, but I really need to.
I don’t know what a fava bean is either. hah. I think I’m going to try steaming them (they’re reallllly tough) and then sauteing them. Who knows what I’ll be left with…
